In a partnership between the Lincoln Park Community Center, NAACP Penn Hills Branch, USW District 10, USW Local 3657, AFL CIO, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Allegheny County Labor Council, and Labor Council for Latin American Advancement; 5A Elite Youth Empowerment hosted nearly 70 community residents for an afternoon of empowerment. Speakers from as far as Philadelphia came to facilitate a panel discussion and presentation focused on understanding the history and growth of incarceration in the U.S. and its impact on communities of color and of low income. |
Mass Incarceration WorkshopThe afternoon featured many diverse participants who were able to articulate the fundamental unfairness of our current criminal justice system, which focuses on punishment and not rehabilitation. While taking the first steps to fix this unfair criminal justice system, the youth in attendance participated in group sessions addressing the impact of mass incarceration within their families and the community at large. |
